Description

This handbook offers a clear, foundational approach to MRI safety, specifically designed for MRI technologist trainees and early-career professionals. Bridging the gap between complex scientific texts and high-level clinical guidelines, it delivers practical, accessible training that starts at the very beginning and builds toward a solid understanding of both the principles and practices of MRI safety. With a focus on the “whys” behind safety protocols, this resource equips technologists not only for safe daily practice but also to adapt confidently to emerging safety challenges in the field.

Forward

Individually and together, we authors have been complaining — for years — about the state of MRI safety training, particularly for MRI technologist trainees and those newer to their professional roles. Many of the MRI safety resources out in the world do a great job describing clinical practice safety (ie, the ACR Manual on MR Safety), or detailed explorations of the physics principles behind MRI safety (ie, texts by McRobbie or Wooten). What they don’t do as well is to speak to the trainee or technologist who doesn’t have years of experience to draw upon, or the scientific background that allows them to jump feet-first into a discussion about how best to integrate a host of discreet element calculations into a net magnetization quantification. Most of the MRI tech training is, understandably, focused on operating the MRI scanner, but this is only part of the MRI technologist’s daily practice responsibilities.

This text came about as a response to a need that we recognized… Just as we seek to train MRI technologists from a “square one” starting point in anatomy, or image setup, or parameter modification, we need resources that allow for the same learning path for MRI safety. This text is specifically built for that purpose: providing training that allows the reader to start at the very beginning (“what a very good place to start”), and get quite significantly advanced in their understanding of MRI safety. This text is also designed to provide the “whys” of MRI safety. This level of understanding will not only help prepare MRI techs for contemporary practice but will help arm them with the foundational knowledge that will help them effectively respond to new and developing MRI safety considerations that will arise in the years ahead.

Whether you’ve come to this text as an MRI radiographer-in-training, or if you’ve been out in the world for a few years and still feel that MRI safety is an opaque box that you can’t see into or understand, this text is specifically for you!
