MRI Safety Simplified

This handbook offers a clear, foundational approach to MRI safety, specifically designed for MRI technologist trainees and early-career professionals. Bridging the gap between complex scientific texts and high-level clinical guidelines, it delivers practical, accessible training that starts at the very beginning and builds toward a solid understanding of both the principles and practices of MRI safety. With a focus on the “whys” behind safety protocols, this resource equips technologists not only for safe daily practice but also to adapt confidently to emerging safety challenges in the field.

The Technologist’s MRI Safety Handbook is an overdue resource to the MRI community. It deftly aggregates numerous resources and countless years of experience into a single source of comprehensive safety information. The content is well laid out in a format that is both detailed and easy to understand. And, while technically detailed, it is presented in a manner that is both understandable and useful; earning its rightful place in any training program, imaging department, or personal library.
Stephen J. Powers BSRT, R, CT, MR, ARMRIT
I found this text an excellent source of information for current MRSO’s and future MRSOs. The staff technologist as well as the student MR technologist will also find valuable information within. Excellent images explaining spatial gradients as well as Time varying gradients. What sets this book apart from others is it even gives instructions and guidelines for reporting an incident. This text re-enforces what decades of MR experience has taught me that the magnet and RF don’t make mistakes, and neither can the MR technologist.
Barbara Nugent, BSc (Hons), PgC (MRI), DCR (R), MRSO (MRSC™)
A valuable addition to MRI technologist resources, this handbook addresses current MRI safety challenges in the USA, simplifies complex physics, and offers extensive references for continued learning.

As utilization of MRI has increased, so have safety concerns. We are able to scan more patients in less time, we are scanning more critically ill patients, and our patients are living longer and having more medical interventions involving implants and devices. All of these contribute to an environment that makes understanding MRI safety crucial for the well-being of both patients and staff. The Technologist’s MRI Safety Handbook will be an important tool for any MRI technologist’s toolbelt, whether they are a student, a novice technologist, or are further along in their career. Advanced concepts are presented in an easy-to-understand, user-friendly format, starting with basic safety concepts and progressing through tailored MR safety scenarios. This book would be an excellent addition to any MR program’s curriculum, giving MRI safety the time and attention it deserves. It would also be a great resource for staff technologists who need a better understanding of the current state of MRI safety and what we can do to improve it. As a 30+ year MRI technologist and MR Safety Officer, having a resource like The MRI Technologist’s MRI Safety Handbook would have made a huge difference when I was a new technologist.
